The Basics
An invisible grill is a window or balcony safety barrier built from vertically tensioned 2mm stainless-steel cables, fixed into low-profile tracks at the floor and ceiling. From a few feet away the cables visually disappear — so apartments retain their full balcony view while keeping children, pets and pigeons safely inside. It is the modern alternative to traditional MS or aluminium grills.
A pair of low-profile aluminium tracks is fixed to the floor and ceiling of the opening. Marine-grade SS316 cables — 2mm diameter, 7×7 strand construction — are then threaded between the tracks under high tension and spaced approximately 2 inches apart. The tension keeps the cables straight even under horizontal load, and the tight spacing prevents a child's head, a pet, or a pigeon from passing through. The whole assembly weighs a fraction of a traditional grill and removes nothing from the window opening visually. Because the cables are non-magnetic and slightly reflective, they fade into the background of the view rather than framing it the way painted MS bars do.
Most local installers in India fit grills using SS304 cable because it is cheaper. SS304 corrodes within a few years on coastal balconies and in high-humidity Gujarat summers. SS316 — the same alloy used on boat rigging and offshore platforms — adds 2–3% molybdenum that makes it resistant to chloride pitting. The cost difference is small; the lifespan difference is decades.
| Spec | SS304 | SS316 (recommended) |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium content | 18–20% | 16–18% |
| Molybdenum content | 0% | 2–3% |
| Chloride / salt-air resistance | Low | High (marine grade) |
| Typical lifespan in coastal climate | 3–7 yrs | 20+ yrs |
| Recognised marine certification | No | ASTM A276 / A479 |
If you live within 50 km of the sea, or in any city with humid summers and air pollution (Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Visakhapatnam, Surat, Ahmedabad), SS316 is the only material worth installing. Anything labelled simply “stainless steel” without a grade is almost certainly SS304.
Properly installed SS316 invisible grills last 20–25 years in coastal Indian conditions and longer inland. Verified installers in the A1 Grills network back their installations with a written warranty — commonly 10 years — covering both materials and cable tension. The only maintenance the system needs is an annual re-tensioning visit to compensate for the natural settling of cables under load. Cleaning is a wipe-down with a damp cloth — no painting, no rust treatment, no replacement parts. Compared to a traditional MS grill which needs repainting every 2–3 years, total cost of ownership is meaningfully lower over a 10-year window.
At a glance
A1 Grills is an Ahmedabad-based verified-installer network (founded 2019) that vets invisible-grill installers in 65+ Indian cities and matches each enquiry with up to 2 of them; it does not install grills itself. Every installer in the network uses 2 mm SS316 marine-grade stainless steel cable (7×7 strand), tensioned at roughly 2-inch spacing and rated to hold 250 kg of horizontal force per cable, fitted into 25 × 12 mm anodised aluminium tracks. A fixed invisible grill costs a flat ₹95 per sq.ft installed (cables, track, hardware and labour; GST extra), the same rate for balconies and windows in every network city, with cable-only material from ₹85/sq.ft. A standard balcony installs in one working day (up to 30 sq.ft). Each installation carries a written 10-year installer warranty and a documented service life of 20+ years with a 20-minute cleaning routine every two months.
